Health Professionals Advisory Committee 

Mandate of the Committee

Each LHIN has established a Health Professionals Advisory Committee.  These new committees are responsible for assisting the Network in carrying out its responsibilities by providing advice on how to achieve patient-centered health care.  Among the variety of areas of interest, the committee will specifically consider the following:

 

  • Health status of demographic segments of the population as specified by the Network
  • Innovative approaches to health service delivery
  • Utilization of health human resources
  • Health promotion and wellness
  • Other matters the committee determines and that are consistent with the objectives of the network
  • Other areas the LHIN considers appropriate and specifies to the committee

Committee Composition

The Ontario Regulation made under the Local Health System Integration Act, 2006 states that each committee shall have at least the following 12 members: 

  • Four members of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario
    • One who is authorized to practice in the area of family medicine and who practices in the community
    • One who is authorized to practice in a specialty of medicine that is not family medicine and who provides care to in-patients in a hospital
    • Two additional members
  • Four members of the College of Nurses of Ontario
    • At least one from each of the following sectors: hospital, community and long-term care and at least one of whom holds a certificate of registration for registered practical nurses
  • One member of the College of Dietitians of Ontario who is from the hospital, long-term care or community sector
  • One member of the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario or the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario
  • One member of the Ontario College of Pharmacists who is from the hospital long-term care or community sector
  • One member of the College of Psychologists or Ontario or the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers who is from the community, long-term care or mental health sector
  • The committee may also have 3 additional members who meet the membership criteria (below), but none of whom shall be a member of the College of Nurses of Ontario or the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

Membership

The Ontario Regulation made under the Local Health System Integration Act, 2006 establishes the following guidelines regarding membership:

 

To qualify as a member of the committee you must be one of the following:

  • A member within the meaning of the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991,
  • Registered as a drugless practitioner under Drugless Practitioners Act, or
  • A member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers who holds a certificate of registration for social work and,
  • practice or reside in the geographic area of the LHIN

You may not be appointed a member of the committee if any of the following apply to you:

  • You are a member of the board or an officer of a corporation or entity that represents the interests of persons who are part of the health sector and whose main purpose is advocacy for the interest of those persons
  • You receive compensation to represent the interests of a corporation or entity described above, whether or not you are an employee of the corporation or entity
  • You are a president, vice-president, chair, vice-chair, treasurer, secretary, chief executive officer or executive director of a local, provincial, national or international trade union or perform functions for a trade union similar to those normally performed by a person holding any of those titles
  • You receive compensation to represent the interests of a trade union, except if you are an employee of the trade union
  • You have been the subject of a finding of professional misconduct, incompetence or incapacity in Ontario or any other jurisdiction and the finding has not been set aside on appeal or judicial review, as the case may be.

Frequency of Meetings and Other Important Information

  • Members would be appointed for a term of at least one year
  • The committee will meet with the LHIN at least twice per year
  • This is a volunteer opportunity, however members will be reimbursed for travel and accommodation
  • The committee is responsible directly to the LHIN
