The purpose of the Local Health System Integration Act, 2006 is to provide an integrated health system to improve the health of Ontarians through
- Better access to high-quality health services
- Coordinated health care in local health systems and across the province, and
- Effective and efficient management of the health system at the local level by Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs)
Commitments to the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care
There is a Ministry-LHIN Accountability Agreement between each LHIN and the Ministry. This agreement sets out each party's obligations in fulfilling the LHIN's mandate as Ontario Crown Agencies that plan, fund and coordinate health services, and deliver home and community care services.

The Minister of Health and Long-Term Care's Mandate Letter focuses on collective key priorities, and outlines the broad service and performance expectations for each LHIN annually.
